Tyne & Wear Metroplitan Fire Brigade was born in 1974 when the Fire Services Act of that year disbanded all previous county borough fire brigades, merging them into county fire services. The new fire area covered was 204 square miles & covered by 20 fire stations. The brigade lasted 30 years until 2004 changing it's title to Tyne & Wear Fire & Rescue Service.
