Tottenham Volunteer Fire Brigade was formed by public subscription in 1870. Infamously in 1892 the entire brigade personel were sacked for insubordination & a new body of firemen was recruited. It was during hard times with many public riots & confrontations with authorities taking place in many towns & cities because of food shortages & other circumstances affecting mainly the poor. Tottenham was at that time part of the County Of Middlesex & after the National Fire Service handed back fire control to county & county borough fire brigades, as a brigade Tottenham ceased to exist. Being drawn in to the Middlesex Fire Brigade in 1947 which in turn ceased to exist as a county in 1965. G.L.C London Fire Brigade was an expansion of the Greater London area & swallowed up most of Middlesex, parts of Buckinghamshire, Berkshire & Surrey also came under London Fire Brigade control. I had the pleasure of serving a very short spell at Tottenham Fire Station on the blue watch in the mid 1980's.
This large brass Tottenham Volunteer Fire Brigade button from 1870 does have a small dent to the surface hence the price. A good condition button of this brigade would sell for 30 to 35 pounds. The manufacturers stamp mark Shand Mason Co, London clearly marked to the rear of the button. A picture of the old Tottenham Fire Station in Harringay, North London is also included.
