The Scottish clan of Sutherland dates back to just after the Norman conquest in 1066. Prior to that it was a Pictish Kingdom taking in Orkney & Caithness, known then as “The Land To The South Of The Norse Earldom”…quite a mouthful today and simplified to the Northern Highlands of Scotland!

The Sutherland Clan were one of the most powerful Scottish Clans, originally founded by Friskin, some say he was a Pictish leader but the majority of historians believe he was a Flemish Knight & one of the many warlords that King David 1st of Scotland employed to “tame” the wild Scottish highlanders. Most of the Norman warlords they employed were mainly employed because of their “ruthlessness” in getting “the job done”. Their reward was the granting of lands to these such men who helped keep his lands from revolt! (Didn’t work though did it ha ha..) they are still proud Scottish people & have always fought oppression, I guess I can admit to “bigging the Scots up” but then my grandfather was Scottish from Edinburgh :o)
The lands granted to Friskin were the ancient Pictish Kingdom of Moray or “ Moireabh “ (in the Scottish Gaelic language) the Sutherland surname ("Sutherlarach" again in Gaelic), meaning South Lands & the family moto is SANS PEUR meaning WITHOUT FEAR. The Clan seat is at Dunrobin Castle in Sutherland & the current Clan elder is Elizabeth Millicent Sutherland, the 24th Countess of Sutherland!
The badge is used but good condition, the rear clasp assembly in good working order & a manufacturers stamp mark MADE IN GREAT BRITAIN on the reverse. A picture of the clan tartan is also added for you to note!
