The R.M.M.V (Royal Mail Merchant Vessell) Capetown Castle was launched on 23rd September 1937 after being built at the Hartleand & Wolff Shipyard in Belfast on the instructions of The Union Castle Mail Steam Ship Company!
It was requisitioned by the British Government in 1940 as part of The Liner Requisition Scheme & refitted to become a troop carrying ship ! She took part in “Operation Bolero” & throughout the war carried over 164,000 troops, finally returned to her owners in 1946.
Her main task was carrying mail & she operated from the Port of Southampton on the south coast of England carrying mail to South Africa. Her last voyage was carried out in September 1967 when she was eventually scrapped as surplus to requirements with faster ships cutting journey’s by 2 days!
