This City Of Oxford County Borough Fire Brigade cap badge worn from 1948 to 1974 is the light blue variation of the 2 colours of enamel waves. It is in great condition retaining good patina to the enamel & sturdy cap fixing lugs to the rear. Manufactured by the London Badge Company it is a standard economy issue 2 piece cap badge with enamel centre fixed to the home office star. The London Badge manufacturers stamp mark is on the rear of the star & it is the thin “pointy” trademark London Badge cap star

Oxford Volunteer Fire Brigade was formed in 1870 & the 1st fire station was built in 1873 in New Inn Hall Street. It moved in 1896 to the Gothic style fire station designed & built by H.W. Moore in George Street.
There have been 2 devastating fires in Oxford on record, both in the 1600’s, one 1644 & the other 1671 & Oxford town dates back to Saxon Times, deriving it’s name from the Saxon word “ Oxenaforda “ meaning ford of the oxen. Shortly after the Norman invasion of 1066 Oxford Castle was erected, the City is also widely accepted as being one of the oldest learning institutes. Oxford University was built in 12th Century & has become one of the most famous in the world!
The 2 recognised variations of this small county borough fire brigade cap badge are the colour & thickness of the waves, the fire brigade had just 2 stations covering 13 square miles & with variations on the cap badge it wore makes it interesting to collectors, batch numbers produced will not be high & they have been reproduced. This cap badge for The Oxford City County Borough Fire Brigade is also the thin rim version as thick rim versions have been made, In good condition & a great cap badge to add to a fire service cap badge collection.
