A nice Victorian Carlow Volunteer Fire Brigade large brass button. These early fire brigade buttons are very hard to obtain & rarely come up for sale. This large brass button from Carlow Volunteer Fire Brigade depicts Carlow Castle as its distinct insignia design. No wording was used on the button as the brigade deemed that the castle was the best identity it needed. The button is in good original condition & the manufacturers stamp mark is to the rear of the button, Shand Mason & Co London, the famous Victorian fire equipement & uniform manufacturers.
Carlow Town is a town which is in the County of Carlow in the Irish Republic. The forming of a volunteer fire brigade in 1880 where previously the military fire brigade was the main firefighting force. Its first Chief Officer was Major K.D Tanner & the fire engine they had was an 1879 Merryweather Paxton. ( see pics & also of Carlow Castle ).
