The Grand Duchy of Hesse Darmstadt was an internal territory within Germany near Baden, situated on the River Rhine, the capital being Darmstatd, became a monarchy in 1806 & lasting until the German Revolution at the end of ww1 in November 1918!

This fine condition officers WW1 (World War 1) leather pickelhaube displays the wider cruciform short spike (as opposed to the Imperial & Prussian versions which were smaller), the fine chinscale assembly wrapped across the front brim. Also displaying standard leather body with rounded front & brass trim, (some helmet bodies were structured with a mixture of materials known as an “Ersatz” helmet” ) , the wappen (helmet badge) depicting the rampant Hessen Lion holding a sword within a wreath, proudly standing out with the Imperial crown atop its head!
Both cockades are present, the overall condition of the helmet is very good & has been kept well by its previous owners, there are scratches on the leather & minor dinks on parts of the brass furniture, the front visor trim is slightly out of shape, please see all pics which hopefully show everything about the helmet. We will be happy to answer any questions about this fine item of WW1 Imperial German headgear, these Hessen helmets seem harder to find than most other states, why ??
