Hertfordshire Fire Brigade post ww2 was the only fire brigade to issue a seperate cap badge for its control room staff making these cap badges rather unique. They are also in demand by fire service cap badge collectors in original condition as copies have been made & are hard to tell apart from the real badges. There are 2 variations to collect, chrome or gilt scroll variations. The chrome scroll variation was NOT reproduced but the gilt scroll variation was. There is a way to tell them by looking at the lugs to the rear of the badge on the gilt scroll variation. The manufacturer who made the copies could not obtain the original cap fixing lugs as the older original lugs were no longer in production. They were much thicker & slightly longer than the lugs available when the gilt scroll cap badges were reproduced. The manufacturer had to use the thin, shorter lugs that were available at the time so that is the way to tell the difference.
These original cap badges are hard to obtain & one sold on an auction site in 2016 for over 180 pounds. This gilt scroll variation manufactured by Mike Trueman Badges of Birmingham has the shorter thinner cap fixing lugs to the rear of the cap badge as i have an original badge in my collection to compare it with.
Still a very hard cap badge to obtain for collectors.
