Two patterns of cap badge exist for the Greater Manchester County Fire Service 1976 to 1985 period, There is either a prominent gap between the coat of arms and the enamel scroll, or no gap which is filled by solid gilt. This cap badge is the solid gilt no gap variation. The badge manufactured by London Badge & Button Company, official cap badge suppliers to the brigade, is in excellent condition. The enamel centre fixed to the standard fully pressed issue Home Office star, both cap fixing lugs intact to the rear of the cap badge.
Greater Manchester Fire Service had 41 fire stations covering 496 square miles of area. In 1985 Metropolitan county fire brigades were disbanded, Greater Manchester was one of them and a new badge Greater Manchester County Fire Service was introduced.
