Cumberland Fire Service was born in 1948 after the N.F.S ( National Fire Service ) handed back fire control to regional county & county borough fire brigades. Cumberland Fire Service had 3 cap badges in force during it's life span, a red ring version & 2 different version's issued after 1955 being a gilt or chrome helmet mantle ! Cumberland Fire Service had 17 fire stations covering 1,513 square miles in area.
This is an original gilt helmet mantle variation with the enamel centre fixed to the standard economy issue, lined Home Office star, both cap fixing lugs intact to the rear of the cap badge. There is some damage to this normally expensive cap badge which i retail at 90 pounds, the gilt mantle coronet is missing from the badge where 2 small holes show it was this harderv to obtain variation. I also believe one of the lugs has been fixed at some stage in its life by the glue attached to it but it is sturdy and i am noit going to remove the glue in case it weakens the lug.
