A long history dating back to 1688 of this British Army regiment, formed originally as The Archibald Douglas Regiment Of Foot in October that year, a tradition naming regiments after their commanders! The regiment went through many name changes as commanders were replaced until the Royal Warrant of 1751 declared that regiments should no longer be named after their commanders, the regiment became known as The 16th Buckinghamshire Regiment of Foot until 1809, the new title 16th Bedfordshire Regiment of Foot was requested by its commander who owned substantial lands in Buckinghamshire & was commander of The 14th Bedfordshire Regiment of Foot so the titles were exchanged!
The new title remained until the Childers Reforms of the British Army in 1881 & the name remained until 1919 when the regiment was amalgamated with The Hertfordshire Regiment after the 1st World War ( 1914 to 1918 ).
This beautiful hallmarked silver & enamel sweetheart brooch bears the Birmingham hallmark & date letter of 1919, the final year of its existence as The Bedfordshire Regiment & is in extremely good condition, a fine silver brooch for any sweetheart brooch collector!
