The Barrow In Furness Fire Brigade formed initially in 1866 as a voluntary fire brigade. Taken over by the borough council in 1867 it had it's home in a few municipal buildings including the Library until a Central Fire Station was built in Abbey Road in 1911. This stationed remained until Cumbria Fire Service built a new station in the 1990's & a Grade 2 preservation order was placed on the old fire station. Barrow In Furness Fire Brigade retained 2 variations of cap badge in the post war period after the National Fire Service ( N.F.S ) handed back fire control to regional county & county borough fire brigades. The 1st & very rare variation is the coat of arms badge set on a domed home office star. The 2nd pattern featured is the red ring variation in force until the brigade entered Cumbria Fire Service in 1974 after the Fire Services Reforms Act of that year. There was only 1 station covering 35 square miles of the surrounding area & all cap badges from this small brigade are rare & hard to find. This badge is an original cap badge & has had some enamel damage repaired, the enamel centre fixed to the standard fully pressed original Home Office star, both cap fixing lugs intact to the rear of the cap badge.
